Group project with Wendy Zhang, Samuel Bennet
This is a 4’x4’x4’ 1/2 scale pavilion is designed to provide a shelter. We derived this idea from sections of two different objects found around the Bridgeport-Bronzeville area around Illinois Institute of Technology that we believed told a story about the area. The modularity with the repeating triangles came from a section of cardboard, and the sharp, reflective triangles jutting in came from a diagonal section of a garden planter. We chose these specific characteristics because we wanted to create a dense, enclosed space that purposefully made the user feel a sense of discomfort to provide relief from their comfort zone. The concept is to place this pavilion in a school, so that when people sit together in the pavilion on the bench inside, the experiencers are placed in a more vulnerable position, to ease candid conversation and communication, as well as creating a tangible symbol that enforces the idea that it is important to get out of one’s comfort zone and create meaningful connections.
